Computer Room Free Cooling
Free cooling is available when the external ambient air temperature is less than the indoor air temperature and the cool external air is lower than the room's requirement.
In the the UK this occurs for approximately 40% of the year and yet is rarely taken advantage of. The cooler ambient air can in some cases be transferred directly into the room but is more commonly used to cool a secondary medium, such as glycol / water.
Free Cooling is achieved by circulation of the secondary medium, which either assists with the air conditioning's prime circuit or when ambient temperatures are low enough, replaces it completely.
Consequently during certain months of the year and often at night, cooling is provided without the need to run refrigeration plant. This significantly reduces power consumption, carbon emissions and running costs.
